The exhibition “Cunda, Knös and Knaspelhutsche” sets out to uncover the encrypted vocabulary of the Tüötten – travelling traders from northern Münsterland – and the secret corporate communication used at C&A.
In a fascinating blend of history and company heritage, it explores the role of secret languages in preserving identity, knowledge, and power.
The challenge: making a secret language accessible to a broad audience.
Using media that decode secrets themselves. For this project, we developed a multimedia exhibition concept that not only informs but engages all the senses. At its heart are interactive stations that introduce visitors to the world of Humpisch through play, a radio station that brings history to life, and a multimedia game centred on the coded transmission of business figures.
Our contribution: experience meets insight. At interactive audio stations, visitors can hear the secret language spoken and try their hand at translating it. And with an old-fashioned telephone and a code-breaking game, they can discover how C&A once transmitted sales figures using secret keywords. The blend of analogue aesthetics and digital technology opens up new perspectives on old forms of communication – making history accessible in an innovative way.

With clear language, intuitive design, and immersive media, we offer visitors – young and old alike – immediate access to the world of secret languages. The exhibition is not only a glimpse into the past, but also a reflection on identity, knowledge, and access – then and now.
